Blackwater Falls, West Virginia

Blackwater Falls Winter Cascade, Blackwater Falls State Park, WV

I’m planning a week-long visit to Iceland in March- cold nights but the possibility to photograph the aurora borealis. It’s been 28 years since the first time Regina and I saw the Northern Lights on an early autumn backpacking trip in Denali National Park. I crawled out of our tent in the middle of the night and they they were, green waves across the sky- totally unexpected in late August.

But this photograph is much more local- winter in West Virginia. I spent a single digit January night sleeping in the back of my old Montero 4×4 to be up at dawn for this photograph. Not that dawn mattered, the weather was heavy clouds and light snow. Iceland promises similar weather so I’m renting a camper van with a heater this time.
