The Black Sands of The Lost Coast

A coastal stream from the King Range joins the Pacific at the Lost Coast

The twenty mile winding road to the Lost Coast of Northern California traverses the 4000′ foot King Range, rugged and steep enough that the engineers who built Highway One along Big Sur, Bodega Bay, and Mendicino wisely elected to detour Route 1 inland for good. After crossing the ridge, formed by collision of three tectonic plates, the road drops precipitously over 2000′ to the community of Shelter Cove. Erin and I enjoyed the black sandstone beach this evening as we explored this remote coastal hamlet.
