Midnight Eiders on the Beach, Dyrhólaey, Iceland
Friends at work have either just returned from or are heading to Iceland this week, so I thought I’d post one of my favorite images from my 2016 Iceland trip. Dyrholaey is on the southeast coast near Vik and is the site of a sea bird sanctuary. This image of the black sand beaches, with the eiders asleep beneath Eagle Rock, is typical of the beauty I found in Iceland. I arrived about midnight in late June the day it opened- it had been closed for the spring eider nesting season. I had the waves, the sand, and the birds to myself all night.
