Church Ruins at Cill-Chriosd, Isle of Skye

I’ve always been fascinated by the Highlands of Scotland.  In June 2015, I rented a 1987 VW camper van with a cranky manual transmission, and left Glascow in rain and fog for Skye. I had a tough time adjusting to the van, the transmission, the narrow and wrong sided roads, ended in in ditch once and was nearly consumed by midges. The weather seemed horrible for photography,  but driving the backroads of Skye, I chanced on this ruined church at Cill-Chriosd or “Christ’s Church”.  Worship has been conducted on this site since the 7th century. These particular ruins date to about 1505 and this building was used for ~350 years until the church was relocated to a nearby village in the mid-19th century.

I parked my car alongside the church lot and mentally noted “how quaint- there is a small  fence around the church yard to keep the sheep out”. I  stepped through the gate and immediately slid about 6 feet across the grass at high speed after stepping on a giant sheep turd. After picking myself up out of the sheep droppings, I found plenty to photograph, and I particularly like the leaning cross tombstone in this image on the right. I came home from Skye with a few good images and stories but am not planning to rent anymore antique VW camper vans.
